A close friend of mine stated last night in one of our group reflections, “Why does it take the most tragic of a situation to make us change the way we act?” This really resonated with me because this is something that I have thought about throughout the past couple years of my life in my own experiences. And now I am encountering this question again.
Today we visited the site of the assassination of the Jesuit Martyrs at the University of Central America, which occurred on November 16, 1989. It was here where we also saw pictures of the crime scene. The pure disgust I felt after seeing what happened here was unmeasurable. These images will be imprinted on my mind forever, and will always serve as an example of what war can bring. For a while, my mind was blank; I didn’t know what to think or how to feel, I was in shock.
I believe that violence is so prevalent in this world because of fear. For many people fear what they do not know. It isn’t until we find the truth through educating ourselves that we are able to understand why it is that we are fearful of certain things.
One way we can do this is by placing ourselves in situations that force us to be uncomfortable. This action allows us to broaden our perspective by detaching ourselves from personal or cultural biases.
It is in this moment when we abandon individualistic desires and become selfless by feeling the need to intervene in something that is greater than ourselves.
So I’d say my answer to the reflection question, “Why does it take the most tragic of a situation to make us change the way we act,” is that many people don’t take the initiative to do something until the time is already up.
The Jesuit Martyrs are an example of how we should live because they had already given all they had for the people of El Salvador.
They stood up in a time of adversity by speaking out for the poor and the oppressed. They spoke the truth when nobody wanted to call out the injustices of the ARENA Party and the Salvadoran Military. When we are able to live in community with one another, like the humble people from La Hacienda and El Junquillo, we wouldn’t have to answer this question.
The people from these small villages have been my greatest life teachers. I know that this group of Brophy students will take these lessons back home with us and try to change the world one step at a time.
